We are looking for volunteers that have been orthopedic patients themselves. Volunteers share and answer questions asked from other patients while they on their surgical journey. The aim is to relieve a patients anxiety by speaking with someone who has already undergone the procedure. We try to match patients and volunteers based on surgery type, gender, age and region.

Personal Disaster Assistance Team Member [ More info  ]           
Must be on call 24 hrs a day for a rotating cycle per month. Be available to provide essential services to clients during each 72 hour call-out. Respond as part of the first team for large scale disaster to provide Registration and Inquiry, serve light refreshments and other duties as assigned and trained for. Be personally prepared for an emergency or disaster. Train and practice disaster response role through Red Cross opportunities. May be required to back up another team when not on call.

Working in pairs you would use prepared materials to inform Seniors in the community on how to be prepared in an emergency where an evacuation may be required. This workshop is an hour long presentation with visual aids, demonstrations and discussions. No experience needed.

COSTI’s York Mentoring Program is designed to connect youth (mentees) with adult community volunteers (mentors) who have a college or university degree the chance to offer support and encourage youth to develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be.  
 
The Mentor-Mentee match will connect for at least 2 hours a week for 16 weeks via email, telephone, and/or face to face.

Doors Open Newmarket is a celebration of local heritage and architecture, part of Doors Open Ontario, a program of the Ontario Heritage Trust. Twelve sites are open to the public free of charge, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. the fourth Saturday of September. Some sites may need help with volunteers to supervise the public. Volunteers are needed to facilitate and assist in adult group discussion and skill sessions. Volunteers are trained and supported by a speech language team in using adapted communication skills to assist clients with communication change and loss due to stroke and brain injury. 
 
Our clients and volunteers meet in groups every week to communicate about current events, arts and music. Group conversations include themed discussions, talking about the news and current events. Skill sessions include cooking program, story-telling, book clubs, cards and games. Volunteers also assist the clients with telling and writing their own Life History Books. 
 
Through this rewarding role, you will be providing support to adults with disabilities in dealing with the challenges of a new life along with helping them develop their communication skills.

Master Gardeners are trained horticulturists who volunteer to provide free advice and education to home gardeners. This is done in a variety of ways including gardening advice clinics at community events, writing articles or instructing small groups. 
 
If you are an avid gardener and enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, you may qualify to become a Master Gardener. MGs in Training must successfully complete 2 years of volunteer service and the required education that is offered online through university distance education programs.  
 
To maintain certification, MGs fulfill a requisite number volunteer hours and education.

Council of Advisory Teens (C.A.T.S.) [ More info  ]   
The Council will meet once a month to work on projects that will help shape the programs and services offered to teens by the Newmarket Public Library. Projects could involve program suggestions and development, book displays, web site development, participation in community events, promotional material development, contests, and collection recommendations. This position is for 13 - 18 year old students. This program runs from October to June. Come out and have a say in your Library.

Many people rely on the visiting library service to request the delivery of books and other library materials directly to their homes, including retirement homes if they are not capable of visiting the library due to illness, restricted mobility or a physical or visual disability. Volunteers select books and other materials and deliver and pick up to the patrons home.

Moraine for Life Adventure Relay - Promotion and Event Volunteers [ More info  ]           
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with an affinity for the outdoors to assist the Oak Ridges Trail Association in promoting and monitoring our 2013 Moraine for Life Adventure Relay. 
 
It's a 160km, 24-hour team relay, with 14 stages from Gore's Landing to King City. Teams will canoe, hike/run and bike along the Oak Ridges Trail. The teams with the best finishing time in each category win.  
 
JUNE 2013: We also need motivated and enthusiastic event volunteers on the course checkpoints to monitor the racers' arrival and departure, offer support, answer questions and troubleshoot as needed.  
 
Depending on the checkpoint, volunteers may be asked to staff a station late into the night. We aim to place volunteers at a checkpoint within as reasonable a range of their own communities as possible. 
 
At least 1 pre-race meeting will be arranged.
