Docents conduct guided tours of the Varley Art Gallery for groups of students and adults. Utilizing the techniques of dialogue and inquiry, and storytelling, docents encourages students to explore their own creativity while learning about the various exhibitions at the Varley.
Activities and Responsibilities
Docents complete an Introductory Training Course, study selected readings and accompany other docents on guided tours to gain knowledge and skills in leading groups. Training sessions further develop knowledge on art, allow the docents to further acquire teaching skills, and to gain an understanding of the purpose of the Gallery and each exhibition.
Docents must be committed, enthusiastic, cheerful, willing to learn, and should have an interest in working with people, especially students. A background in education and/or art is an asset.
The Varley Art Gallery docents have free access to all exhibitions, the Gallery library, book borrowing privileges, as well as selected exclusive talks and programming. Docents may also purchase Gallery Gift Shop items at a 10% discount.
Anyone can apply, we are looking for enthusiastic people who have a sincere interest in introducing children and adults to Canadian art and the McMichael collection.
